VOYAGE EN NORMANDIE

French Trip Black and White Amazing Photo

29 Form 5, 6 and 7 pupils set off for Normandy at 8.30 am on Monday 26th June accompanied by 3 staff. The 11 hour journey across the length of England and the English Channel via the Eurotunnel was tiring but we all found it a very rewarding experience and one we will look back on with fond memories. The students were fantastic in the way they worked together and helped each other and persevered even when tired. They coped brilliantly with a week of strange food and a foreign language, with the older pupils proving to be excellent role models by helping the younger children getting to bed, learning French and playing games together. We spent part of Tuesday visiting the landing sites of Arromanches with its floating 'Mulberry' harbours and went to the 360° cinema museum. We were all moved by the bravery of the men involved and the sacrifice of lives in the cause of freedom. The beach (Sword Beach, part of the Operation Overlord organised by Winston Churchill and executed on 6th July 1944) harboured an ancient barge ship, which served as an effective memory of the past. Pupils practised their French in the dining room by asking for more bread and other items of food, and at the Bayeux market while buying 'spinners' and other souvenirs. One highlight was the visit to the 'co-pain', where we made bread in a wood oven, although different students may say that the visit to Mont St Michel or the Bayeux tapestry was the highlight for them. Mont St Michael was once besieged by the English during the Hundred Years War, and this ancient city, complete with an old Abbey atop of the impressive structure, served to amaze and delight at every turn. The Bayeux Tapestry was a truly fascinating insight into the past, and all the children were enthralled and in silent awe as they circled the 70 metre long piece of art, which detailed the story of Harold's betrayal, and William the Conqueror's successful battle to claim England. We had great evenings on the beach behind the hotel where we played many exciting team games and took part in many seaside activities, including "balance-the-shell" relays, football-dribble runs, intercepted by the teachers to make this a particularly challenging task, and various other competitive activities which were completed in teams, houses and even boys vs girls!
