U11S NETBALL V SHREWSBURY HIGH PREP

IMG 1420

An eight strong team of year 5 & 6 girls set off in gale force winds hoping for a storm of a performance at Shrewsbury High in the first netball match of the season.

On arrival, it was clear that this was to be a literal battle of David versus Goliath with Shrewsbury High towering over the height of the Yarlet lineup. What they didn't bank on though was our dogged determination and fighting spirit.

Having lost the toss, Shrewsbury chose to take the first centre pass and the action was underway in this game of 4, 8 minute quarters. Yarlet made a great start and the first goal soon came from resident goal attack 'Sophie Shoot em n Score Beech' capitalising on her first attempt at a shot to take us into an early lead.

During the first quarter, Sophie had two more shots from mid and long range after great passing work by Dani Dynamite Rotchell and Tilly the feet Capewell but the score remained 0-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Encouraged by our early lead, the team welcomed on Scarlet the Battler Bryan in place of team captain Dani. Shrewsbury began strong with two early shots on goal and Tilly's tenacious attempts to keep possession lead to a mid quarter toss up. The quarter ended 2-1 to the home team.

Sensing an uphill battle, we decided to put some height into our defence with Ella the Energiser moving from shooter to keeper. Goal defender Alice the Bulldog Beardsmore and Ella did a great job which allowed us to draw level to 2-2 with a goal coming from Sophie after some excellent bounce passing between her and new shooter Tilly in order to get into a prime shooting position. Three more attempts from the Yarlet forwards came close but Shrewsbury snatched one back late in the quarter making it 2-3.

As the centre in the last quarter, Eager Ellen Clarke got the game underway with a superb pass to Purdy the Pugilist Oliver, who, having observed the 'first to pull the ball away from their opponent rule' in action, set about to win every ball that she laid her hands on leading to a strong Yarlet final quarter.
Again, it was Sophie Shoot em n Score who quite rightly scored the final goal of the match to even things up at 3 all.

After the traditional cheers and thank yous, Alice the Bulldog Beardsmore was quite rightly nominated woman of the match with a pure first class performance where her grit was matched with control leading to no obstructions or, more importantly, injuries - always a worry with our Alice!

With an excellent start to the season, the U11s look set to claim their first victory soon.
