This is what Prep Schools’ cricket is all about:
unusually clement weather, the chock of leather on willow and two evenly matched teams unwilling to give an inch! That Yarlet left Smallwood Prep with the narrowest of victories was the icing on the cake, although the single run which separated the two teams at the death hardly allows us to feel complacent. That said, a satisfying batting performance balanced a somewhat patchy bowling attack, and we will work to improve on this during Tuesday nets. Pick of the bowlers were Henry Pickering and Jamie Betteley, who gave our batsmen a chance of reaching a total which initially looked beyond us. Even then, it was certainly tense state of affairs until Alfie Farrington steered the ship home on the final ball of the match. All in all, a splendid afternoon's sport which bodes well for next week's fixture at home to Birchfield. Finally, thanks to all parents who attended the match and indeed outnumbered the home support. It really makes a difference to these occasions and is much appreciated.
