Saturday 11th July was the annual leavers' match at Yarlet.
In fabulous conditions the boys won the toss and elected to bat first. For the fathers there was an opening partnership reminiscent of the great opening pairs of years gone by: Holding and Marshall, Lillee and Thompson, Walsh and Ambrose, McGrath and Gillespie and of course Korylco-Bowers and (Mrs) Hardy-Smith.
The boys weathered the early storm and were making steady progress, only for Mr Hardy-Smith to take the wicket of Gabriel Korylco-Bowers for 16, who was quickly followed by Captain Will Warwick; caught behind by past pupil Angus Munro of Mr Mitchell's bowling. From here on in the boys struggled as the fathers' attack remained on top throughout, despite the resistance of Harrison Hardy-Smith, who scored an excellent 46. This superb knock did give the boys bowling attack something to work with; the boys finishing on 116. Pick of the bowlers, Mr Hardy-Smith with 3 for 12 off 5.
After a fabulous tea in the sun (credit to Mrs Swift for this, a delicious tea), the boys took to the field ready to take on the fathers batting line up. Mr and Mrs Hardy-Smith opened for the fathers, with Mr Hardy-Smith scoring a quick-fire twenty and retiring, with Mrs Hardy-Smith anchoring the innings for the fathers, batting for a full eight overs. With further runs from Mr Brad and Mr Mitchell, the fathers managed to reach the boys total with just 2 overs to spare.
This was, as ever, a wonderful occasion and a pleasure for all to be a part of. Thanks must go out to three of our past pupils; Joseph Thowless-Reeves, Jasper Mitchell and Angus Munro who played very well, and also to all who took part to make this such a great day. To the boys we wish good luck and to the fathers.....be prepared to defend your crown again next year!
