An exciting match with equally matched opposition.
We fielded first and managed to get two players out in close succession at 1st base with accurate throws from Jessica Hood to Jemima. This rumbled our opposition and put more pressure on them to actually hit the ball. Excellent fielding from Danielle, Jessica Cartmail and Evi kept the score of full-rounders low but the half-rounders steadily mounted up from miss-fielding and sloppy catching.
In we went to bat, but over-confidence from Jessica Hood and Grace meant they were stumped out, putting pressure on the rest of the team. Jemima continued to dominate by making some cracking hits and very sensible decision making. Jessica also managed a rounder from some very plucky running. The score at half time was 5 – 3½; we were just behind.
Our fielding in the second innings was better but not slick enough to match Shrewsbury's speed. Again they amounted 5 rounders. We went in to bat knowing that we had a lot of work to do but we were no match for our opposition as the pace of their bowling increased. One risk too many meant that 5 of our players became out and only Evi managed to score a full rounder. Our running was more like a leisurely stroll on a summer's afternoon than a heated rounders match against two rival schools.
In the end the score was a close 7 ½ to 10 but we were beaten by a slicker team. We now know we need to up our speed and pace of the ball if we want to compete at the next round in the IAPS competition.
