Yarlet under 13s took a strong team to the Shrewsbury Sixes football competition on Sunday 11th September at Shrewsbury School. We were grouped with Priory, Shrewsbury High and Westholme in the group phase of the competition and began well by beating Priory, who had won the competition for the past 5 years, by 2 goals to nil. Max Raine and Joe Archer scored the Yarlet goals in a very good performance with Charlie Belfield showing excellent defensive qualities. In the second game Yarlet played even better as a team with Max (2) and Joe again sharing the goals in a 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury High. Greg Beardsmore looked very confident in goal and there were also good contributions from Ben Eden, Sam Archer and Mackenzie Tart. Our final group game was the toughest but again great effort and skill prevailed with Yarlet winning 3-1. Max, Joe and Jack Farrington were the scorers in a win which put Yarlet top of their qualifying group with maximum points and into the quarter finals to face Packwood.Yarlet started well and a superb in-swinging corner from Max put us 1-0 up before Sam doubled the lead with a great header and from then on Yarlet completely controlled the game Joe, Max, Sam and Charlie putting in fine performances. In the semi-final Yarlet faced Prestfelde who were a big, strong side and started the game well. For the first time we found ourselves under pressure and conceded a deflected goal. Despite a valiant effort by everyone we could not pull the deficit back and Prestfelde held on for the win against a tired Yarlet side. In fact they went on to beat Formarke in the final and we were awarded 3rd place on countback. All of the squad put in lots of effort and came up just short in a very tight semi-final and they should be very proud of their achievements against excellent schools. Players, staff and parents all enjoyed a very exciting day out....well done lads!
