The Board of Governors is composed of members who provide the skills and experience needed for the advancement of the school, including educational, legal, accounting and other business skills. The full Board meets at least three times a year and is supported by committees in such fields as Safeguarding Children, Health and Safety, Academic, Finance and Marketing.
Board members are elected at general meetings of The Yarlet Trust and come up for re-election every three years. Committee members are elected by the full Board and include co-opted members of staff, parents and Old Yarletians.

Steven Bane is the CEO of a cash security product manufacturing and design business based in Derbyshire and former Army Officer. Educated at King Edward Grammar School, Spilsby, Lincolnshire and Worksop College, he started his career in The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as an Officer Cadet direct from school. After joining his regiment he took an in service degree in mechanical engineering and a further degree in materials science. During his military career he served in the Falklands conflict and Northern Ireland along with more exotic locations including Hong Kong. He finished his military career as a platoon commander instructor at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Being the Chair of the sub-committee for Health and Safety which includes overseeing off-site visits, Steven is active in these roles and has attended the Bala outward bound week and the French trip. Steven and his wife Eleanor live in Hilderstone and have two children, their son is currently in Shrewsbury School having graduated from Yarlet in 2016 and their daughter is currently in Main School and intends to go on to Shrewsbury School in 2018.
Rachel studied Economics and subsequently Land Management at the University of Reading. She is a qualified Chartered Surveyor and a member of the RICS. Rachel has been involved with Yarlet since 2007 when her daughter joined the School. Rachel sits on the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
MA, MSC(Oxon), Solicitor, DL. Studied biochemstry and subsequently re-qualified in law. Based in Staffordshire for over 25 years; currently a partner at Hatchers, specialising in corporate and commercial law. Has been involved with Yarlet since 1999 when her two daughters joined the school. Ann served as High Sheriff of Staffordshire for the year 2014/2015 and served for some years as Deputy Pro-Chancellor at Keele University as well as being a Council Member at Lichfield Cathedral.
Benson Greatrex was born in Stafford and was educated at Repton School. He then studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Leeds and subsequently completed an MBA at Keele University. Benson has been active in the Stafford business community for most of his working life and was on the board of the Stafford Railway Building Society for more than thirty years becoming Chairman in the mid 1990s. His other business activities have included the family travel agency, coach company and car dealerships, his current interests being family property companies. Benson is a keen sportsman and continues to play tennis and golf on a regular basis. Married to Caroline with two children, Emma and Freddie (an Old Yarletian), Benson lives in Stafford and has been a Governor at Yarlet since 2012. Benson sits on the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
Peter Middleton was educated at Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh and is a graduate of Bristol University where he read English. Following a year teaching at Highbury Preparatory School in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, Peter returned to the UK to teacher training at the University of Strathclyde and a first post at Loretto School in East Lothian. He moved south joining Shrewsbury School in 2008 where for eight years he was Master in Charge of The Hunt, Shrewsbury’s historic running club. Between 2011 and 2016 Peter was Housemaster of Rigg’s Hall, one of the boys' boarding houses at Shrewsbury, and in his present role as Deputy Head he oversees the co-curricular life of the School. A keen runner with 21 marathons to his name, Peter is married to Jenna, a local GP, and they have three young daughters who keep them busy! Peter sits on the Marketing Sub-committee of the Board of Governors.
Giulia (Julia) Mitchell is English / Italian dual nationality. Educated in Cheshire, she read English Literature & Language at Christ Church, Oxford University and has worked across a number of international sectors: finance, business development, marketing, affinity brand partnerships & brand extension programs. Most recently, she has been a Director of Bentley Motors prior to establishing her own Consultancy business. Julia is married to Julian, himself an Old Yarletian! They have 2 boys, both at Shrewsbury School, and they live in Shropshire. Julia sits on the Safeguarding Sub-committee of the Board of Governors.
Keith was born in Liverpool and after attending Ellesmere Port Grammar School for Boys decided against pursuing formal higher education. Instead he embarked on a career in banking, retiring from full-time work in 2015. The majority of Keith’s 40+ years as a career banker were spent with Williams & Glyns / Royal Bank of Scotland and finishing with Svenska Handelsbanken (a Swedish bank). The last 25 years were spent in business and commercial banking. Keith moved to Stafford in 1991 to open a new branch of Royal Bank of Scotland in the town and was its first manager. Married for over 40 years to Gill and with two children: Dan who is himself married and lives in Australia; Lucy who still lives at home while studying to become an Accountant. Keith’s passion is running and being outdoors. He has completed numerous 10k’s and half marathons but now concentrates on ultra-distance events. In 2010 he completed the 250km Marathon des Sables (one week across the Moroccan Sahara Desert) and as recently as 2016 completed the 95 mile West Highland Way Race. An active Freemason, when he has time Keith also enjoys gardening (though not very well!), reading and following sport. Keith sits on the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
Pauline Sharratt is the Finance Bursar at Repton School and sits on the Finance Sub-committee of the Board of Governors here at Yarlet.
Nick's family have lived at Yarlet since 1903 and have provided two headmasters, Andrew Fernie (1903 – 1929) and Keith Tarling (1937 – 1970). Nick was at the School from age 5 to 13, then at Repton where he captained the running team before going on to Jesus College, Oxford where he read Modern Languages. After Oxford he entered the legal profession and became a corporate law partner at Freshfields, where he spent 30 years advising on international mergers and acquisitions and building up the firm's European network. In 1970 he advised his father, Keith, to convert the School into a charity and he remains a governor of The Yarlet Trust. Nick and Liza live in London and at Yarlet and have three daughters and nine grandchildren, of whom one attends Yarlet and three are OYs! Nick is Chair of the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
Paul is a graduate of Rhodes University in South Africa from where he graduated in 1988 with an honours degree in Economics and History. After a spell teaching at St Edward’s School in Oxford he moved to the King’s School in Canterbury where he first lead an academic department and then became housemaster and then senior housemaster. Since 2008 has been head of the Department of Politics and International Relations at Rugby School. Paul is married to Elizabeth and they have four young children. Paul is Chair of the Academic Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
Mrs Tennant is currently Deputy Head at Repton School where she was Acting Head for some 18 months before Alistair Land became Head in the summer of 2016. Mrs Tennant been an outstanding governor here at Yarlet since March 2015 and took on the role of Chair of Governors in March 2017.

Born and bred at Yarlet, Judy Teather is the younger daughter of a previous headmaster, David Carr. In 1968, Judy became the first female Yarletian before continuing her education at Abbots Bromley where she played school and county tennis, hockey and lacrosse. She studied Business at College in Oxford and began her career in Public Relations and Event Management – mainly sports related – with the Lawn Tennis Association, the Amateur Athletics Association and Adidas before moving into the regional press. After 10 years, she set up her own PR and Marketing Consultancy which she ran for 15 years with clients varying from professional football clubs to new house developers. During this period, in 2002, Judy started working part-time as Development Director for Denstone College looking after the Denstone Foundation and the work which it does for all former pupils. She was appointed Head of Girls' Boarding in April 2008 and continues her work as Development Director. Judy has four children, 3 daughters and a son, all of whom are, or have been, educated at Denstone and all of whom are dedicated Stoke City fans! Judy is the Governor with responsibility for Boarding and sits on the Safeguarding Sub-committee of the Board of Governors.
Paul Vicars was educated at Epsom College and then St Andrews University. Paul has been Headmaster at Birkenhead School since September 2016, an HMC Independent Co-Educational Day School on the Wirral for pupils aged 3 to 18. He previously taught Geography and was a boarding Housemaster then Deputy Head Pastoral at Shrewsbury School. Paul is married to Vikki and they have 3 young children. Paul sits on the Academic Sub-committee of the Board of Governors.
