The Board of Governors is composed of members who provide the skills and experience needed for the advancement of the school, including educational, legal, accounting and other business skills. The full Board meets at least three times and is has particular responsibilities in the areas of Safeguarding Children, Health and Safety, Academic, Finance and Marketing.
Board members are elected at general meetings of The Yarlet Trust and come up for re-election every three years. Committee members are elected by the full Board and include co-opted members of staff, parents and Old Yarletians.

Jo attended Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls and graduated in Languages from The University of Hull. Jo has worked in Education recruitment for the last 20 years; she is currently Head of Operations for ABC Teachers and Group Operations Manager for the TES Supply Group.
Jo has been associated with Yarlet since 2010. She is a current Yarlet parent, with an older child who is an Old Yarletian now attending Denstone College and is married to an Old Yarletian.
Her areas of expertise include Safeguarding, Compliance, Auditing, Training and GDPR, and takes a particular interest in our Early Years department.
Rachel studied for a degree in Economics and following 4 years of work she returned to education to study for a degree in Land Management at the University of Reading. Having gained her professional qualification she moved to join the family surveying practice in Birmingham where she remains a Director. Rachels’ involvement with Yarlet commenced in 2007 when her daughter joined reception, she is also married to an OY. Rachel sits on the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
Peter Middleton was educated at Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh and is a graduate of Bristol University where he read English. Following a year teaching at Highbury Preparatory School in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, Peter returned to the UK to teacher training at the University of Strathclyde and a first post at Loretto School in East Lothian. He moved south joining Shrewsbury School in 2008 where for eight years he was Master in Charge of The Hunt, Shrewsbury’s historic running club. Between 2011 and 2016 Peter was Housemaster of Rigg’s Hall, one of the boys' boarding houses at Shrewsbury, and in his present role as Deputy Head he oversees the co-curricular life of the School. A keen runner with 21 marathons to his name, Peter is married to Jenna, a local GP, and they have three young daughters who keep them busy! Peter makes a particular contribution in Marketing.
Giulia (Julia) Mitchell is English / Italian dual nationality and lives in Staffordshire. Educated in Cheshire, she read English Literature & Language at Christ Church, Oxford University and has worked across a number of international sectors: finance, business development, marketing, affinity brand partnerships & brand extension programs. Most recently, she has been a Director of Bentley Motors prior to establishing her own Consultancy business. Julia is married to Julian, himself an Old Yarletian! Their 2 boys have been educated at Yarlet and Shrewsbury School. Julia takes a particular interest in Boarding and Safeguarding.
Antony (Tony) was educated at Windsor Service Children’s School, Rheindahlen, Germany. After a short period of employment in the Civil Service, he joined the Royal Air Force in January 1998 as a Weapons Mechanic. He was selected for officer training and graduated as a Pilot Officer in the Administrative (Secretarial) branch, now known as the Personnel Support branch. Following professional training, Tony was employed in a wide variety of roles and achieved promotion to Flying Officer, Flight Lieutenant, and finally Squadron Leader along the way. Duty travel has included Singapore, USA, Canada, Azores and the Falkland Islands, as well as accompanied postings to Cyprus, Gibraltar and Ascension Island. Honours and awards include: General Service Medal (Northern Ireland); The Iraq Medal; Operational Service Medal (Afghanistan); General Service Medal (Western Africa); The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal; the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal; and a Commander Joint Forces Command Commendation for excellent service in support of Defence strategic objectives. He is also a Chartered Manager and Member of the Chartered Management Institute, holding a Diploma in Strategic Leadership and Management. Since leaving the Royal Air Force in January 2019, Tony is studying for a HR Management diploma and volunteering his time as a Staffordshire magistrate and Yarlet school governor, where he sits on the finance and health & safety sub-committees. Tony is married to Heather, a civil servant and military veteran herself, and has two daughters, Jessica, aged 10, and Emilia, aged 5, who both attend Yarlet School. His main interests are military history, learning the piano (slowly), and spending quality time with his family. Tony sits on the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
Christopher (Chris) is an Old Yarletian and Old Reptonian.
Keith was born in Liverpool and after attending Ellesmere Port Grammar School for Boys decided against pursuing formal higher education. Instead he embarked on a career in banking, retiring from full-time work in 2015. The majority of Keith’s 40+ years as a career banker were spent with Williams & Glyns / Royal Bank of Scotland and finishing with Svenska Handelsbanken (a Swedish bank). The last 25 years were spent in business and commercial banking. Keith moved to Stafford in 1991 to open a new branch of Royal Bank of Scotland in the town and was its first manager. Keith has been married to his wife Gill for over 40 years and they have two children and a granddaughter. His passion is running and being outdoors and he has completed numerous 10k’s and half marathons but now concentrates on ultra-distance events. In 2010 he completed the 250km Marathon des Sables (one week across the Moroccan Sahara Desert) and as recently as 2016 completed the 95 mile West Highland Way Race. An active Freemason, when he has time Keith also enjoys gardening (though not very well!), reading and following sport. Keith sits on the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
Pauline Sharratt was invited to join the Governing body in March 2015. Born and raised in Staffordshire she commenced her finance career in industry qualifying as a professional accountant in 1992. During her training period and since qualifying she has held a number of finance and tax related positions in the local brewing industry before moving in 1994 to a senior finance role in the Health Service. Following a subsequent period in internal audit Pauline joined Repton School as Finance Bursar in December 2002. Pauline and her husband Neil, a FD in a local food processing company have three children, all Old Reptonians. Hannah working in the City as PR Manager, twin boys, Bradley and Max. Bradley is studying Industrial Economics at Nottingham University and Max is training to become a chef. Outside of her professional life Pauline enjoys running, having completed, Great North, Great South and London Marathon, together with numerous overseas and UK races of shorter distance. In addition, she enjoys cooking, gardening and attempting to play the piano! Pauline sits on the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
Nick Tarling's family have lived at Yarlet since 1903 and have provided two headmasters, Andrew Fernie (1903 – 1929) and Keith Tarling (1937 – 1970). Nick was at the School from age 5 to 13, then at Repton where he captained the running team before going on to Jesus College, Oxford where he read Modern Languages. After Oxford he entered the legal profession and became a corporate law partner at Freshfields, where he spent 30 years advising on international mergers and acquisitions and building up the firm's European network. In 1970 he advised his father, Keith, to convert the School into a charity and he remains a governor of The Yarlet Trust. Nick and Liza live in London and at Yarlet and have three daughters and nine grandchildren, of whom one attends Yarlet and three are OYs! Nick is Chair of the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board of Governors.
Born and bred at Yarlet, Judy Teather is the younger daughter of a previous headmaster, David Carr. In 1968, Judy became the first female Yarletian before continuing her education at Abbots Bromley where she played school and county tennis, hockey and lacrosse. She studied Business at College in Oxford and began her career in Public Relations and Event Management – mainly sports related – with the Lawn Tennis Association, the Amateur Athletics Association and Adidas before moving into the regional press. After 10 years, she set up her own PR and Marketing Consultancy which she ran for 15 years with clients varying from professional football clubs to new house developers. During this period, in 2002, Judy started working part-time as Development Director for Denstone College looking after the Denstone Foundation and the work which it does for all former pupils. She was appointed Head of Girls' Boarding in April 2008 and continues her work as Development Director. Judy has four children, 3 daughters and a son, all of whom are, or have been, educated at Denstone and all of whom are dedicated Stoke City fans! Judy is the Governor with responsibility for Safeguarding and takes a particular interest in Boarding.
Sarah Tennant is currently Deputy Head at Repton School where she was Acting Head for some 18 months before Alistair Land became Head in the summer of 2016. Sarah has been a governor here at Yarlet since March 2015 and took on the role of Chair of Governors in March 2017.
